The first junior high in Wenatchee was called Wenatchee Junior High. It was opened to students in 1929, and the principal's name was Herbert B. Ellison. In 1937, eight years after the school's opening, Herbert Ellison suffered a fatal heart attack. The school's name was then changed to H.B. Ellison, in honor of the first principal. Several more years passed, and H.B. Ellison began to get very crowded, so the school board decided to built Pioneer Junior High i n 1958. Population in Wenatchee continued to grown and H.B. Ellison was a very old building. H.B. Ellison became the high school and Orchard was built to take the place of H.B. Ellison. When Orchard Junior High opened, a mascot could not be agreed upon, so the school board decided to use the H.B. Ellison mascot, the Bulldogs, for Orchard.
