OMS History

Dress Code

When the school first opened in 1962, girls could not wear pants unless the weather was 0-20 degrees below zero. The boys, however, could wear jeans but they had to tuck their shirts in at all times. When girls wore skirts, the teachers made sure the skirts were long enough by making the girls kneel. If the skirt touched the floor it was long enough, but if it did not they had to change skirts. Both boys and girls were encouraged not to wear jewelry or hats. When the Title IX Bill passed in 1972, girls were allowed to wear pants.

By 1998, the dress code allowed girls to wear pants, but students still had to follow other rules:

  • No hat or other item that covers your head is allowed.
  • The clothing you wear cannot reveal your shoulders, back, chest or upper thighs.
  • Anything considered a safety hazard cannot be worn. (This would include sharp jewelry, CD players, and headphones.)

So you see, just because girls can wear pants doesn't mean they can wear ANYTHING they please. Boys don't have any special privileges either.
