What is AVID?
AVID is an elective class for students who want to be successful in school, would like to go to college, but need some extra help to reach that goal. The AVID class will:
- Help students succeed in more challenging classes.
- Provide classroom tutors to give students extra help.
- Teach students how to study.
- Teach students how to stay organized.
- Expose students to careers, colleges, and ways to pay for college.
Who are AVID students?
An AVID student has some (or all) of these qualities:
- "B" and "C" students--sometimes even "D" students--who have the ability to do better in school and want to go to college.
- First member of the family to attend college.
- With encouragement, is willing to work hard.
- Has good attendance and good citizenship.
AVID is...
Successful! 95% of AVID students enroll in college!!
A full year class - with one 8th grade class and one 7th grade class.
AVID is NOT...
- A remedial class for students who need extra help because they are below grade level.
- Experimentsl - AVID is 25 years old--used in 1,900 schools in 30 states & 15 countries.
