This is a reminder of the procedures required to order sack lunches for field trips… but first an explanation:
I am aware that there are staff and students who don’t appreciate the fact that we only offer only a cheese sandwich in our sack lunches. We don’t like it either but we don’t have much choice and I would like to explain why:
1. Sanitation: Because we cannot guarantee that the sack lunch will be kept below 41 degrees as required by the state health code we needed to come up with a lunch that would not “spoil” when subject to temperature abuse. That precludes the use of deli meats.
2. Allergies: As you are probably aware, Wenatchee School District is NOT nut free, but we have made an agreement with our Nursing Dept. not to use peanut butter in our sack lunches to minimize the chances for issues on school busses with kids that have severe peanut allergies.
3. National School Lunch Requirements: No matter what we serve, our meals must meet Federal guidelines for the amount of Meat/Protein, Bread Grain, Fruit, Veggie and 8 oz of fluid Milk or we lose our funding. A common request is “Can we have Juice instead of Milk because the milk gets warm and the kids don’t drink it.” We are required to offer milk no matter what the extenuating circumstances are so unfortunately this makes our sack lunches even more “undesirable” (nothing quite like warm milk and a cheese sandwich for lunch…mmmm, yummy!!!).
Hopefully you can see that these three factors severely limit our choices for what can be packed in a sack lunch.
We are not proud of our sack lunches and personally, I would like to discontinue serving them but I know that would make for a lot of hungry kids, but it is an option. We are not REQUIRED to offer sack lunches. They are the least favorite aspect of our program!
I am totally open to suggestions/questions, so please submit them if you have them!
The remainder of this email is the rest of the “fun requirements” that make this program even more cumbersome (“Would you like some “Red Tape” with your lunch today sir?”) If you would like to order sack lunches all of the following is REQUIRED!
I apologize for this being such a cumbersome program but I hope you now understand what we are up against.
Thanks………Kent

Because of National School Lunch Requirements, you are required to do the following in order to pick up your lunches:
Your students must go through the “Service Line” just like at the normal meal times before you leave on your trip in order for us to charge each students account at the Point of Sale. The same Free, Reduced and Paid rules and criteria apply for sack lunches as they do with regular lunches. At the end of the line each student will receive their lunch. We cannot allow you to take the lunches otherwise.
Be sure to make arrangements with your building’s cashier so they can be ready to ring up the student meals when you are ready to go.
If you have any questions about this process please contact Food Service Office at 662-9345.
